CHICAGO, IL -- rowlandcontemporary is pleased to present Salad Days, a collection of recent work from the MFA Graduate program at Northwestern University. Part One features the work of Ryan Fenchel, Roxane Hopper, Katherine Lampert, Julie Rudder, Olivia Schreiner and Craig Yu. Join us for an opening reception Friday, June 2 from 6-9pm. Gallery Hours are Saturday 11-5pm or by appointment. This exhibition will run through July 8.

Ryan Fenchel’s video work brings together disparate elements and narratives that coalesce in a graffiti-like style. Fenchel is currently in the MFA program at Northwestern University, Evanston IL. He received his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute, Kansa City, MO. Recent exhibitions include The Department of Safety (Anacortes, WA), 22nd International Festival (Sarajevo, Bosnia), and Art Space (Kansas City, MO).

Capturing the slightest movement and regurgitating fragments of time, Roxane Hopper’s photographs and videos expose the temporal aspects of our surroundings. Hopper received her MFA from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, and BA from Trinity University, San Antonio, TX. She has participated in group shows at OpenSource Art (Champaign-Urbana, IL), Sputnik Project Space (Brooklyn, NY), and 1926 Gallery (Chicago, IL).

Drawing on the notion of play, Katherine Lampert combines imagery from various sources to create meticulously painted and colorful works that investigate the boundaries to which we claim art to be at once serious and playful. Lampert received her MFA from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, and her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. Lampert has participated in group shows at The Cooper Union (New York, NY), Interlochen Center for the Arts (Interlochen, MI), and Cenci Gallery (Rome, Italy).

Using pedestrian materials, Julie Rudder constructs witty and playful installations that create artificial yet intimate stages for experience. Rudder just completed her first year in the MFA program at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. She also holds a BA in Psychology and a BFA from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro, NC. Recent exhibitions include Fraction Workspace (Chicago, IL), 22nd International Festival (Sarajevo, Bosnia), and Weatherspoon Museum of Art (Greensboro, NC).

Olivia Schreiner’s landscape based paintings extend our gaze as we explore the relationship of painting to landscape to introspection. Tinged with subtleties that blur the boundaries between representation and abstraction, her work underscores the notion of thoughtfulness in an otherwise frenzied world. Schreiner received her MFA from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL and BFA from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee, WI. Recent exhibitions include Union League Civic & Arts Foundation (Chicago, IL), Vox Populi Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), and The Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia, PA). Her work has been reviewed in Newsday New York City, NY Arts, and Art Matters.

Capable of stirring deeply buried nerves, Craig Yu’s powerful canvases attempt to capture horrendous moments of historical import. Working primarily in black and gray, Yu depicts carnage, death and other chaotic scenes through beautifully spare paintings that evoke a sense of familiarity but are equally discomforting. Yu received his MFA from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, and a BFA from University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham, United Kingdom. Recent exhibitions include Devening Projects + Editions (Chicago, IL), 22nd International Festival (Sarajevo, Bosnia), and Goethe Institute Gallery (Hong Kong).
